ACTING Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister Irfaan Ali has promised that this year’s ‘Main Big Lime’ will be transformed into a more family-oriented, three-day activity.

altIn a press conference held on Thursday in the boardroom of the Tourism Ministry, Minister Ali disclosed: “We’re working along with the private sector on the launch of the Christmas Village on Main Street. We’re talking to some of the major stakeholders so that we can have a buildup — a menu of activities and a comprehensive programme that can be attractive to an entire family: kids, parents, teenagers in that family,” Ali informed.
The Tourism Ministry is collaborating with the private sector in order to restructure the event, and explore new ways in which it can be enhanced, according to Minister Ali. He explained that the aim is to convert Main Street into a ‘Christmas Village’ that will include steel pan music, and other new attractions in order to create a Christmas atmosphere.
Lots of persons come into Guyana during the Christmas season, and they would want to take their children on small family outings, which will constitute an added complement to the ‘Main Big Lime’ of 2012.
When the ‘Main Big Lime’ was first held in Guyana in 1999, specific emphasis was placed on promoting Guyanese tradition and culture, while providing tourists and citizens with occasion for a “reunion” every year. The Lime has become an annual event on the calendar of the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, and is one of Guyana’s biggest annual events.
