A SEPTUAGENARIAN was fined $75,000 with the alternative of six months imprisonment, on Tuesday, for uttering a forged document.
David Deochand, 71, was ordered to pay the fine immediately by Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The defendant (no address given) had pleaded guilty to having, on October 5 at Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), with intent to defraud, uttered a Republic of Guyana passport with a forged expiry date to an immigration officer.
The forgery was on page ten of the document and Deochand knew it to be false, the court was told.
Defence Counsel Paul Fung-a-Fat begged the court to exercise leniency, stating that Deochand’s girlfriend is the one who did the forgery on the passport.
Deochand told the court that he had the money to make the immediate payment.
