SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (CMC) – Guyana’s Golden Jaguars crashed to a 0-7 defeat against Costa Rica in their final Group B game of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers at the Estadio Nacional Tuesday night.
The defeat for Guyana, already eliminated, was also a disappointing end to a 2014 World Cup campaign that started with a measure of promise.
The Jaguars have signed-off with the unenviable record of not winning a single match of their six Group B qualifying games against Mexico, El Salvador and Costa Rica.
Costa Rica dominated the game to clinch a spot in next year’s hexagonal round joining Mexico, the other team to advance from Group B.
Marksmen included Randall Brenes and Álvaro Saborío who scored twice to lead the way for Costa Rica in the blow out.
The Costa Ricans needed a home victory over winless Guyana to ensure advancement.
Brenes’ second goal in the second minute of the second half was from the penalty spot after Guyana’s Walter Moore was ejected.
A week ago, Costa Rica seemed in danger of being eliminated from the World Cup.
But after a 1-0 win in San Salvador, and a rout of Guyana, Costa Rica carry some momentum into the six-nation stage to be played from February to November next year.
