18-year-old killed in early morning joyride – Relatives hospitalized

PADMA NARINE, 18, of 272 Hope Housing Scheme, was killed on the spot early yesterday morning after the minibus she was travelling in slammed into a utility pole before ending up in a nearby trench on the Hope Public Road, East Coast Demerara. The Guyana Chronicle was told that the driver of the bus failed to negotiate a turn properly and he careened off the road and into the post.

altThe Chronicle was also informed that the now dead teen was among eleven other persons, all related, except for the driver.
Speaking with this newspaper yesterday morning, Davika Totaram, the mother of the dead girl, said that the driver of the minibus BKK 1976, whose name was given as Jermaine, was
dropping her son-in-law home.
According to Totaram, after dropping off her son-in-law, they were heading back to Hope Housing Scheme where they all lived, when the driver kept the vehicle going at a “very fast rate’. She added that she enquired from the driver why he was going so fast and asked him to slow down.
The driver did not heed her, made a rash turn, and they crashed.alt
She told the Chronicle that she immediately began looking for her children and after realizing that they were nowhere in sight, she began screaming and searching for the children.
The woman then climbed out of the trench and as soon as she reached the road, she saw her daughter. She was lying motionless on the road and altone of her arms was missing.
Her other children were lying nearby crying and shouting.
The children were gathered and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where they were treated and some were sent away, while her daughter’s body was taken to the mortuary, and her two sons and cousin remained in police custody.
The driver was in police custody up to press time last evening, while the mangled minibus was parked at the Cove and John Police Station.
When this publication visited the home of the family yesterday morning, they were preparing for a wake. The grieving mother was surrounded by relatives and neighbours who had gathered to offer sympathy to her and her children on the passing of their loved one.
