Government commitment to provide Leguan airstrip remains absolute – Dr. Luncheon

THE Government commitment to provide aviation services for the people of Leguan remains an “absolute one”, Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS) Dr. Roger Luncheon reassured last week. “For the people in the islands, the commitment is an absolute one and the work that has already been done has, essentially, convinced them about how solid that commitment has been,” he told the Guyana Chronicle following his usual post-Cabinet media briefing at Office of the President, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, Georgetown.
Luncheon disclosed that land has already been acquired in Leguan and the commitment to build an airstrip here is absolute, not only because it is an island susceptible to problems with emergency evacuation but also because it is a beaming commercial zone in terms of agriculture and tourism.
“That’s why we have to be able to facilitate island development by making transportation in and out of the islands a lot less dependent on marine and on Transport and Harbours,” he offered.
Building airstrips on the islands of Leguan and Wakenaam were promises made in the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) 2006 Manifesto, because of the fact that travel to the mainland in times of emergency could prove timely, Luncheon pointed out.
He added that it could save lives and provide a comfortable, alternative means of travel to both residents and visitors, especially those from the diaspora who may be time constrained.
The airstrip on Wakenaam has already been completed.
Meanwhile, at the opening of Wakenaam Nite last August, President Donald Ramotar said: “The airstrip that we built here (Wakenaam), many people had criticised it; but that would be a very important factor in the development of tourism, because many tourists organise their travels in packages.
“I know that many people are already thinking that they can get a package to take tourists to the Kaieteur Falls and have lunch or dinner on Wakenaam, so that they can have an opportunity to see another part of the country with totally different physical characteristics,” he remarked.
