SOME residents of Belle West, Canal Number Two, have commended ranks at Wales Police Station, also on West Bank Demerara, for acting swiftly and apprehending several suspects, including a couple wanted for murder in Suriname.
The man and woman, fingered in the attempted killing of a woman in the neighbouring country last February, were held with things stolen from the Belle West area in their possession.
Police indicated yesterday, that while investigations are continuing into the attempt on the life of the 57-year-old Surinamese, several more are expected to appear in Court today.
Others arrested are being investigated for burglaries which have occurred over the past two months.
Persons told the Guyana Chronicle that more homes were broken into during the day than at night. One householder, who gave his name as Prem Khan, said he has had three such experiences with burglars.
The man said one of the things he believes is contributory to criminal activities in the area is the many empty lots which attract unemployed young men, who can be seen gambling and engaging in other pursuits that are not necessarily gainful.
Another man said after a man called ‘Boogie’ burglarised his house, the latter took a taxi and was heading to East Bank Demerara where he and his main accomplice live.
Suspicion
The victim said, as Boogie was taking money from a bundle of notes amongst his booty, a gold wedding band fell out of his pocket, raising the suspicion of the vehicle driver who enquired about the origin of the ring and was told it belongs to the person in possession.
Subsequently, as the frequency of burglaries was reported, Khan and the driver went to the Wales Station and, following their report, accompanied cops from Wales, as well as Providence Station, also at East Bank Demerara, made a swoop on Wednesday and found several stolen items, jewellery and clothing included.
The couple living on the premises was held and the confiscated things taken to Wales Station, where people laid claim them.
The two in custody called names of several other accomplices who have since been arrested but the detention of one sparked protests from some of his villagers who said he had been at a nine-night wake since Tuesday night and could not have been involved in any crime on Wednesday.
The home of the man who triggered the protesting was searched but nothing to implicate him was found.
Meanwhile, one woman returned home from work last week and discovered one of her doors open, her savings cups emptied and the place ransacked.
