GUYANA’S lone representative at the World Masters Powerlifting Championships (WMPC) which is currently on in Killeen Texas, USA, Winston Stoby, did not let his weight difference deter him, as he lifted his way to a championship medal and new Deadlift (DL) record in the process.
He was the lightest athlete in the 74KGS M2 Category but by no means a pushover and he lifted his way into the record books as he had promised before leaving these shores, by setting a new Deadlift World Record of 272.0 kg, which also landed him the gold medal.
Another golden performance was achieved in the Squat when the Guyanese strongman churned out a lift of 255.0 kg, while he took the bronze medal in the Benchpress when he pushed 140.0 kg.
But when many thought Stoby had reached his limit, that was not so as his performances earned him the Best Lifter in his category which attracted six competitors. He totalled 485.52 Wilkes Points relegating Koichi Taniguchi of Japan to second place with the USA’s Mark Sigala third.
Stoby’s performance was so shattering that he failed only one of his nine attempts and that failure came when he set about to increase his world record in the DL, by attempting a lift of 277 kg.
