Digicel takes dental outreach to New Amsterdam

DIGICEL Guyana, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Central Georgetown and the Cheddi Jagan Dental School, yesterday held a dental outreach at Esplanade Park, New Amsterdam, Berbice, where more than 500 children as well as adults had their oral health needs fulfilled.
Speaking on behalf of Digicel, Gavin Hope, Manager of Sports and Development, told the Guyana Chronicle that in addition to the dental outreach, they also distributed “school packs” which consisted of a backpack filled with stationery; and the children also enjoyed recreational activities provided by “Tons of Fun” Party Service, with a trampoline and a bouncy castle being the main attractions.
Hope stated that it is their first time in Berbice, but it is the second time for the activity which was held in the city last year, and on Wednesday, they will take the dental outreach to Front Circle, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown then to Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara.
He added that the partnership is a stepping stone for much more to come, with Digicel Guyana seeking to bring services needed in communities where children will benefit; but adults will not be turned away.
Scores of children and adults had their teeth extracted, filled, cleaned and polished yesterday, via a mobile dental clinic staffed by personnel from the Cheddi Jagan Dental School.
Meanwhile, Coordinator of the Rotary Club of Central Georgetown, Mike Davis, said that the mobile dental unit was gifted to the local Rotary 10 years ago from their colleagues from Richmond, Virginia, United States.
On hand was Town Clerk of New Amsterdam, Merlyn Henry, who said that she is pleased with the activity.
Digicel several weeks ago handed over the refurbished Esplanade Park Kiddies Corner to the Mayor and City Council of New Amsterdam.
