THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) yesterday opened its first branch office at Annandale, on the East Coast Demerara corridor. The office will be used to serve the people of Annandale and the East Coast Demerara, as well as being a place where educational activities will become the order of the day for the youths. The establishment of the office was spearheaded by Attorney-General Anil Nandlall, who is a member of the PPP Central Committee as well as a Member of Parliament(MP).
At the opening ceremony yesterday afternoon, Nandlall told the gathering that the location was intended to serve residents from Cummings Lodge to Cane Grove on the East Coast Demerara.
However, based on former President of Guyana, Dr. Cheddi Jagan‘s inspirations, the initiative was conceptualized to serve the people on the East Coast of Demerara.
The PPP is seeking to maintain a healthy relationship with residents within that corridor, which will also be the recipe for continued progress for the PPP.
Nandlall noted that the PPP is a dynamic party, which always wants to reach out to its comrades and the people, whereas they also have the Cabinet Outreach programme, in which they also get to interact with members of the communities they visit.
He said that it was against this background that they established the PPP East Coast Demerara Freedom House for the development of the people. The facility will be opened from Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm.
He added that the premises will be Internet ready, and students can utilise the facilities to do their home work and other educational projects free of cost
And members of the public can visit the location to have their issues addressed by the Party.
Nandlall told attendees that a list of the reports received at the East Coast branch will be complied and addressed by the various ministers.
He explained also that the office will become a hub of activities as the party seeks to foster a better relationship with the people on the East Coast Demerara.
Also giving remarks was Minister within the Ministry of Finance, Bishop Juan Edghill, who said that the Freedom House at Annandale was established to serve the people in Region Four, and will be a place where people can visit to have their complaints aired, as well as serve the residents both socially and educationally.
Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, last night during brief remarks, said Annandale is a strong supporter of the PPP, and their comrades did not let them down in the last election.
He sees the location of the PPP Freedom House branch as fitting.
He explained that although many unfortunate incidents have taken place on the East Coast Demerara, such as the Lusignan massacre, the people in this region still have faith and confidence in the Party, which kept the PPP going.
Rohee said this initiative would contribute significantly in re-enforcing what they already have, and the venue could also be used to hold events, meetings and activities beneficial to the community.
He said the building is user-friendly and is dedicated to all PPP stalwarts who seek to serve the residents of East Coast Demerara.
The ceremony was punctuated by songs and a dance, after which the signboard was unveiled by Minister Anil Nandlall, followed by a tour of the facility, which is equipped with furniture and computers.
