Eight Guyanese students receive Chinese medical scholarships

EIGHT Guyanese students have been awarded scholarships by the Chinese Government to pursue medical studies in the Republic of China. In a presentation ceremony held last Wednesday at the Chinese Embassy’s Lot 2 Mandela Avenue operation, the Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Yu Wenzhe, addressed the students, praising them for working hard.

He said the language barrier would be a challenge, but assured that China was a beautiful country with very hospitable people.

Ambassador Yu expressed hope that the students would be able to master the professional knowledge; and, upon return, serve the Guyana Government and provide quality medical service to the people of Guyana.

He noted that the students would have an opportunity to learn about the people and culture of China, as “People to people exchanges are very important”.

Stating that young people are the future of Guyana and the world, Wenzhe said that due to this reaching out to young people, China and Guyana can have a good understanding, and continue their friendship from generation to generation.

According to Third Secretary at the Embassy, Xiong Shuilong, the scholarship programme started in 1973. A   variety of subjects are offered, including International Politics, IT, Computer Skills, Construction, and more are being offered this year.

Shuilong said that the number of students being sent each year on scholarship has increased from 2007, when there were between two and five, to now be between eight and 10.
