ACTING Chief Justice Mr. Ian Chang, SC., yesterday, granted 34-year-old Lindener Glenroy Chapman $60,000 bail after a magistrate had refused him bail when he had appeared in court charged with being in possession of a component of ammunition, with an empty 12-gauge cartridge shell, without being the holder of a firearm licence. Chapman was also charged with two other offences — throwing stones, and assaulting a police officer — for which he pleaded not guilty and was allowed bail in the sum of $7,500 by Her Worship, Magistrate Hazel Octive Hamilton, before whom he appeared.
The offences were alleged to have been committed on Sunday, 12th August, 2012, at Wismar, Linden.
The petition for admission to bail was made by Blosom Robin of 135 Public Road, Melanie, East Coast, Demerara, sister of Glenroy, and was presented in Chambers by Attorney-at-Law Mr. Basil Williams.
The magistrate had remanded Glenroy Chapman to prison, and the matters were adjourned to 17th September, 2012 at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
In her petition, Miss Robin said she had been advised by Glenroy, that on Sunday, 12th August, the police were rounding up men in the Wismar area when he was picked up. She said he told her that he was informed about the possession charge only when he was being removed from the Mackenzie Police Station to the Diamond/Grove Police Station.
The petitioner said: “I am advised by my counsel, Mr. Basil Williams, Attorney-at-Law, that the court ought to take judicial notice of the fact that members of the Disciplined Forces have littered the Wismar area with empty cartridges after discharging their weapons, and even small children were picking up (empty shells).
“That I have been further informed by the said Glenroy Chapman that he is innocent of the said charges.”
