CID called in to investigate missing laptops-HP

CABINET Secretary and Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon Wednesday informed media operatives that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Guyana Police Force has been called in to investigate the disappearance of a considerable number of One Laptop per Family (OLPF) laptops. “I was advised that it was a significant number of laptops…investigations are still ongoing…unfortunately the insurance apparently does not cover theft,” Dr. Luncheon said.
He explained that the laptops were recently reported missing from the OLPF warehouse at the Forshaw Street, Queenstown property.
The OLPF initiative aims to equip every Guyanese, especially those less fortunate, with the necessary Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills, so that they can function and compete in the fast changing world.
Since its development and implementation, the programme has received overwhelming response from the public, as to date, 14,294 laptops have been distributed countrywide.
This massive ICT drive by government will empower poor and working class Guyanese with the modern means of enhancing their education and livelihood with the use of computer technology.
Earlier in the year, the governments of Guyana and China signed a US$8M grant-gift agreement for the supply of 30,000 laptops to the OLPF project.
