RAFEEK Mohamed, 53, of Friendship Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara, a father of six, was killed on the Land of Canaan Public Road, EBD, at about 18:45 hrs on Sunday, after the car in which he had been an occupant collided with a jeep. Police reported that driver of motor vehicle PKK 5609 was proceeding along the roadway when driver of motor car PMM 5690 is alleged to have attempted to overtake PKK 5609, which was turning at the time, resulting in a collision.
Rafeek Mohamed and his wife, Jasmattie Sookra, who were in PMM 5690, received injuries and were taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where Mohamed was pronounced dead on arrival, while Jasmattie Sookra was treated and sent away.
Both drivers are in police custody assisting with the investigations.
At the Mohamed residence yesterday, several men were erecting a tent to keep wake, while the inconsolable Jasmattie Sookra refused to speak to the media.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has said that in relation to traffic, there has been a 30% reduction in road fatalities up to the end of July this year, in comparison to the same period last year; with 51 fatalities this year and 73 last year.
Speeding has been identified as the leading cause of road deaths and accidents.
Police also disclosed that the year continues to see reductions in relation to the other categories of traffic accidents – serious, minor and damage.
Statistics reveal that pedestrians are the main road users affected in accidents, with 14 such persons having lost their lives on the roads by the end of July this year.
Twelve pedal cyclists and 12 drivers of motor vehicles have also lost their lives as at July this year.
Police note that speeding continues to be a major contributing factor to fatal accidents, causing 35 of the 49 fatal accidents at the end of July this year.
Traffic enforcement by the police has resulted in a total of 39,312 cases being made against errant motorists by the end of July this year, of which 9,162 cases were for speeding.
However, during August 2012, there have been three fatal accidents, which resulted in the deaths of three persons, including a child.
