After a long day of decision-making for the development of the Amerindian people of Guyana, the conclusion of a fruitful day saw the election of new executives of the National Toshaos Council (NTC), with Toshao Derrick John being elected Chairman. The others are Joel Fredricks Vice Chairman; Richard Cornelius Secretary; Marbell Thomas Treasurer; and Lloyd Perriera Assistant Secretary/ Treasurer.
The elections were followed by a press briefing during which the Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai, congratulated the executive committee of some 20 toshaos for the smooth and responsible process in which they exercised their ability to choose an executive which will continue the work of the council.
Newly elected Chairman, Toshao Derrick John, in his inaugural presentation, congratulated the members of the NTC for electing him to continue the leadership of the council from outgoing chairperson Yvonne Pearson.
He noted that his first priority is to return to his people and educate them about the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) which has benefits for all Guyanese. His vice-chairman, Toshao Joel Fredricks, committed his energy and time to listen to the voice of the people and assist his chairman in executing the mandate of the council.
Outgoing Chairperson Yvonne Pearson expressed how happy she was, as this occasion brought back memories of the 2009 election when she was elected to serve her people.
‘Tonight I am here happy again to witness another election; and as the outgoing chairperson, I feel the fire of the new warriors who were just elected to continue the work of the NTC.”
The new body has set the date for the first executive meet which will be on August 31.
