BERBICIAN Kriskal Persaud won the fifth preliminary round of the Red Cherry Ladder Chess Tournament on Sunday August 5 at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club, despite losing one match to National Champion Taffin Khan. Persaud finished the day on an even score with Khan but on the tie-breaker took the first place trophy which won him a $5 000 cash prize and a Red Cherry voucher. Khan placed second and Ronuel Greeenidge came in third.
Greenidge defeated Khan during the first match of the day but lost to the Berbician, who is a former national champion.
The accumulated points standings of the top ten at the end of Sunday’s play read: Taffin Khan 78, Kriskal Persaud and Ronuel Greenidge 66 apiece, Anthony Drayton 56, Saeed Ali and Glenford Corlette 52 apiece, Chino Chung 51, Roberto Neto 50 and David Khan 45 and Irshad Mohamad 39.
The sixth and final preliminary round will run off tomorrow August 8 from 16:30 hrs. The best junior and best female players would be awarded trophies for their outstanding performance during the preliminaries.
The emerging top four will meet for the finals on Saturday August 11. The scores from the preliminary rounds would not be considered for the finals.
Meanwhile, the winner of the finals would be determined from the scores during the playoff. During the encounter this Saturday, each player will have ten minutes on the clock to defeat an opponent.
Players will face each other in a double round-robin format and the entire finals would last for approximately four hours. The players would engage each other in rapid chess and each match would not exceed 20 minutes.
The first place winner will take home $50 000 cash, a Red Cherry voucher of the same value and a trophy. The second to fourth place winners would be awarded Red Cherry vouchers and medals.
