SAMUEL Daniel(no address given) was charged on August 2 with the offence of improper disposal of garbage.
It was alleged that on the said date in the vicinity of Quamina Street, contrary to the by-law of the City of Georgetown Disposal of Waste Amendment Act, the accused dumped two bags of garbage in the area.
He pleaded guilty before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court and was fined $10,000 with the alternative of seven days imprisonment.
In light of this, Head of the Commission of Inquiry into the affairs of the Georgetown City Council, Mr. Keith Burrowes, during an interview with this publication warned that the Council will be taking strict measures in dealing with any person who is found guilty of such acts.
“When these persons are caught they will be charged and if possible sentenced,” Mr. Burrowes said.
He noted that there will be increased monitoring activities within areas around the city to ensure persons caught engaging in the improper disposal of garbage are found and dealt with accordingly.
These include surveillance cameras and also giving the Town Clerk an added responsibility of sending constables into the fields to do constant checks at any given time.
Mr.Burrowes said he will also be looking at drafting legislation for a ministerial order that deals with penalties, since he believes that the present regulations are not strong enough.
“We are putting harsher penalties, and in a short space of time we will address the issues of garbage,” he stated.
According to him, many are of the belief that the implementation committee is there to do the groundwork, however, its task is to work along with the Council to get the job done.
‘These people are there to support the work of the Council because if there are offices who will not cooperate there will be a problem,” he pointed out.
