ESSEQUIBIAN Vadewattie Ramsukh, 32, a mother of three living at Hope Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, narrowly escaped death after a lone bandit attacked her whilst she was walking home at on evening of July 20 last at about 18:45 hrs. She recalled a man grabbing her from behind as she walked along the street a short distance from her home, then locking her neck in a vice and demanding her money.
Vadewattie said she handed over her bag with all the money she had, but the man continued to choke her; and he grabbed her hair, pulling her head backwards in an attempt to break her neck.
She said she saw her husband and two other persons sitting in her verandah, and she called four times for him to help her, but there was no response.
The woman consequently fought with the lone bandit whilst pleading with him to let her go, because she had already handed over her money; but the man, whom she scratched with her fingernails several times on the face, kicked and stamped her several times in the back and other parts of the body.
He then dragged her into a ditch with water, and forced her face down into the muddy water. She said it was death staring her in the face as she struggled for life, and she thanks God for sparing her life.
Vadewattie said the man sat upon her in the ditch and she lost consciousness. After a short while, he lifted her on his shoulders, and was heading for the Hope Big Canal to dump her body when she bit him on his shoulder and he knocked her down on the ground, kicking her several times again.
By then Vadewattie was weak, one of her eyes was swollen shut, and her legs were badly damaged. Amidst curses, the man asked rhetorically, “How this woman taking so long to dead?” With those words, Vadewattie realized that the man was on a mission to kill her.
She said he became confused, and left in search of a piece of wood with which to beat her to death; and with the little strength left in her body, she ran home and frantically knocked on the walls of her house to get the attention of her husband, because she couldn’t carry on.
Vadewattie said she was rushed to hospital; but at the accident and emergency unit, she was not treated for her injuries that night because of ‘some problems’, and her husband took her back home.
The matter was reported to the Cove and John Police Station, but ranks there have not visited the scene, or arrested anyone in connection with the matter.
Vadewattie is currently experiencing serious problems with her marriage. She said she has removed from her Hope Block 5 residence because of fear for her life.
She is now calling for justice, and for the law to take its course.
She said she has reported her domestic problems numerous times to the Police Welfare Section.
