AFC scams and double standards

THE way has been cleared for the AFC Congress to be held early in August, as that party moves to elect new leadership and executive members.
Yet, members have no idea of the allegedly devious, underhand scams committed by some members who are currently at the AFC executive level, and who are poised to remain in those positions.
While co-founder Khemraj Ramjattan and his new sidekick, Moses Nagamootoo, are shouting from the rooftops that there is a morass of corruption within the PPP/C-run administration, they themselves are hiding their own corruption against the underprivileged who seek their help.
Ramjattan, for example, as a member of the legal profession, has been accused by his own client, a man who is disabled, of taking millions of dollars for legal representation in a property case.

Ramjattan, allegedly in a bid to earn a little more from the case, conspired with the other party, resulting in his own client losing the case and being deprived of his property.
Had this underhand move been perpetrated by a member of the PPP/C, it would have brought down the wrath of the AFC on their heads, with calls for disbarring of the legal practitioner and removal of the person from public office; and advocacy would have been made that the culprit should be jailed.

Those who are outraged at this alleged takeover are asking why is there deafening silence while relevant information, as given by the client, is public knowledge.

Yet, Mr. Ramjattan continues to function as a legal practitioner and leader of a Parliamentary political party.

There are a number of other cases in which clients have allegedly claimed legal impropriety against Ramjattan, yet none has been investigated.

It seems that double standards are the rule of the day for the opposition parties in Guyana. Everyone else must toe the line, while the Opposition must be allowed to break all the rules.

Legal practitioners think it strange that there has been no investigation launched. The question must be asked why the Bar Association has not looked into the accusation.

Why have the Guyana Human Rights Association and other social organizations, who claim to represent the underprivileged people, failed to hear the cries of this poor man?

Is Ramjattan sacrosanct?

Double standards are clearly displayed here, since the AFC deems that Government and PPP/C party officials must be investigated when there is an accusation, but when it comes to the Opposition, all is well because they must appear to be squeaky clean to be elected to high office, regardless of the scandalous baggage they allegedly fetch.
