Berbice River Bridge accident investigated

A team of investigators was yesterday afternoon seen at the site of the accident at the Berbice River Bridge, where the MV Jaimotoo crashed into the bridge sometime after midnight, causing a temporary halt to traffic on both sides of the Berbice River. Minister of Public Works & Communications, Mr. Robeson Benn, in an invited comment to this newspaper, indicated that he received information of the accident and had sent a team of investigators to urgently look into the matter.
He assured the newspaper that a report would be furnished to him, from which he would inform the media on the matter.
A source close to the Berbice River Bridge Company Limited said the vessel lost an anchor during the heavy winds and nip tide, and drifted in the high current of the tide towards the bridge, where it collided with a pontoon, causing minor damage to the pontoon and vessel.
The Berbice River Bridge Company Limited, when contacted, indicated that an investigation was in progress and a statement would be issued on its conclusion.
However, the Bridge was back in operation yesterday morning.
