A NEW primary school under construction in Paramakatoi, Region 8, that will cost government $80.5M and which will ensure better comfort for younger children has been highly welcomed by parents of the primarily mining region. Funding for the structure was made available through a grant from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
Donna Marks Lewis, a Paramakatoi resident and support staff worker at the Paramakatoi secondary school expressed the view that the students will be much more comfortable when the structure is completed. She also hoped that the school would be equipped along the lines of some city schools in terms of teaching aids.
Louelle Samuels, another support staff of the secondary school, said she was happy with the initiative since the previous one was old and was built sometime back by foreign missionaries.
Samuels also expressed the hope of other Paramakatoi residents who are now looking forward to a more modern building with new amenities not previously available. Additionally, they are appreciative of the fact that all classes will again be held in one building.
Patty D’Aguiar, a teacher of the Paramakatoi Primary School, was also grateful about the move to construct the new school as classes are currently being held at two different locations, one of which is a church. Bringing the children together under one roof would put an end to the inconvenience this causes.
Eight-year-old Candida Williams, a student of the Primary school is also very happy about the new building since according to her, it would be very good to have everyone together again.
In fulfilling its commitment to ensure every child receives an education, the Government of Guyana has over the years, constructed and rehabilitated numerous schools countrywide in an effort to ensure that every child has access to a quality education.
The new school building being constructed in Region 8 is another achievement in the advancement of education in Guyana.
Guyana has already achieved the Millennium Development Goal of Universal Primary Education and is working assiduously towards attaining the secondary level.
A new secondary school has been completed in Region 9, another interior location, with an attendant dormitory to cater for students who live far off.
