Unborn baby, three adults killed in road accident

GUYANA Police Force (GPF) Sergeant, Shurland Thomas and two of his relatives, Timica Lupe-Brumell and her brother, Dayson Brumell, were all killed early yesterday morning, when the policeman lost control of the motor car he was driving and it ended up in a trench along Friendship Public Road, East Bank Demerara. It was reported that Lupe-Brumell was pregnant and her unborn baby perished with the adult trio as they were trapped inside the vehicle below water.
Police investigating the fatal accident said it occurred about 06:30 hrs and resulted in the death of the driver, Thomas, of Lot 10 Supply and other occupants, 28-year-old Dayson Brumell and Timica Brumell, 25, both of Lot 8 Supply, also on East Bank Demerara.
Investigations revealed that Thomas was driving PNN 6791 when he lost control and it careened into a trench on the western side of the roadway.

Thomas and the other occupants suffered injuries and were taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
At the home of the Brumells, Timica’s father, Rudolph Brumell told the Guyana Chronicle the siblings were on their way to work when their cousin, who resides a few houses away, offered them a drop and, while they were on their way to the city, they met with the accident and died.
He added that Dayson Brumell, an employee of Torginal Paints, is survived by a twin brother and the sister is a security guard at Cheddi Jagan Dental School.
The Brumells’ home was plunged into deep shock and some were unable to speak while others were too grief-stricken to relate what happened.

The mangled car after it was pulled from the trench at Friendship Public Road yesterday morning.

Meanwhile, Thomas’ wife was not at their residence but relatives there were shell-shocked, as well, still getting details of what took place.
The policeman was married twice; the second time a few weeks ago and is the father of two. His tragic death was being mourned by his colleagues yesterday and work mates in the GPF were still trying to come to grips with his untimely demise.

They said Thomas was a very careful driver and could not imagine him speeding or being reckless and termed his death a great loss to the Force.
He was attached to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) and is the sibling of Superintendent Edgar Thomas, also of the GPF, Eve Leary, whose son, Carlos Thomas was killed while riding a motorcycle, at Camp and Lamaha Streets, in Georgetown, on Sunday.
Police said they are awaiting a post-mortem to determine the cause of the sergeant’s death and confirm whether he and the others drowned, because it was some time before they were pulled from inside the mangled car by public-spirited citizens.
The GPF Traffic Department has recorded 46 accidents with 48 deaths for this year, so far, as compared with 66 accidents and 72 deaths for the corresponding period in 2011.
