IT’S currently smooth sailing for the Guyanese A-Class team and the Headquarters team at the conclusion of the second day of the 73rd annual Guyana Police Force (GPF) Track and Field Championships. The lawmen and women once again invaded the Eve Leary Sports Complex Ground and competed in 14 finals and five heats for the day.
In the A-Class points standing, Guyana sit atop with 157 points ahead of Trinidad and Tobago, who are second with 45 points and Antigua, third with 25 points.
Defending champions of the B-Class, Headquarters, are way ahead on 213 points while A Division are comfortably placed in second with 130 points. B Division are yet to reach triple figures since they have only accumulated 79 points and Country Division are last with 38 points.
The competition has a rest day today and wraps up tomorrow from 10:00hrs with the much anticipated march past and major races.
Yesterday the climax of the day saw National long distance athlete Dennis Horatio easily win the Men’s Open 5 000m in a time of 15:33.4s ahead of Larry Josiah (16:30.8s) and Corlette who all represented HQ.
The Women’s 800m was won by A Division’s S. Williams in a time of 2:35.5s ahead of HQ’s S. Wilson (2:46.7s) and A Div.’s S. Boyer.
In the B-Class Men’s 800m, Johnson, Carroll and Jordan, all of A Division, did a podium sweep in that order with times of 2:06s, 2:08s and 2:13s, respectively.
In other results, Guyana made a clean sweep in the Men’s A-Class Javelin with Cordel English leading the way with a throw of 47.61 metres. Adrian Massiah was second with a best throw of 44.71m and C. Leacock was third with 44.67.
The Women’s A-Class Javelin was won by Natasha Alder with a best throw of 34.03m while T. Brown-King was second with a throw of 28.23m and N. Thomas of Trinidad and Tobago was third with a throw of 27.06.
