Georgetown women crowned Inter-Association Women’s Football League champs

LED by captain Andrea Lashley, the Georgetown women’s football team are now the 2012 Inter-Association League champs as they defeated Lethem 3-1 in the final game of the league on Tuesday evening at the GFC ground. Lethem, who were well supported by fans and families of the young female footballers, formed part of the medium-size crowd at the GFC ground to support the players in what was described as an exciting final game played under soggy conditions.
Georgetown opened their score sheet in the 13th minute through a right side shot in the penalty area from Nichola Leacock that passed the Lethem custodian to open up a 1-0 lead..
Skipper Andrea Lashley converted her shot outside the six-yard box after a scrimmage from a cross ball to send her team 2-0 in the 24th minute.
All was not lost for the Lethem side as Lori- Ann James, Sonia Griffith and Samantha Daniel continued their raids on the city women’s defence as Lethem tried their best to score.
Samantha Daniels then got her way and caught the City goalkeeper off her first post to revive the Lethem side in the 29th minute, pulling one back at the end of the first half.
On resumption, Georgetown constructed a lot of long passes to avoid the heavy muddy conditions as the hinterland women continued playing short, build-up possession ball but were denied much forward movement since the conditions did not allow for the free movement of the ball.
Leacock chalked up her second goal of the night sending her team 3-1 in the 60th minute as the Lethem women continued fighting for opportunities to convert.
The score remained unchanged at the end of regulation time giving the City women the championship for the third consecutive year.
Among those present were president of the Women’s Football Association, Vanessa Dickerson, GFF Super league Administrator Kirk Douglas, former president of the Georgetown Football League Oliver Hinckson and members of the media.
