Linden situation will severely affect Amerindian people

THE Amerindian Action Movement of Guyana (TAAMOG) deeply regrets the loss of three lives in the mining town of Linden during the protest demonstration against the increased electricity tariff and wishes to extend its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. TAAMOG is appealing for calm, peace and the restoration of normalcy at Linden so that responsible leadership can take its course to determine a positive way forward for the people of Linden.
The current situation will affect Guyana as a whole. TAAMOG is highly concerned that the blockage of roads by the demonstrations will severely affect the livelihoods of Amerindian communities in Region 10, and regions 7, 8 & 9 which both the APNU and the AFC having Amerindian MPs seem not to care about at this time.
Vital food, fuel and other supplies are now blocked from reaching hinterland Amerindian communities which will have devastating effects on those communities. The National Toshao Council (NTC) conference is scheduled for the first week in August 2012 and if the current situation continues at Linden, village Toshaos from Regions 7, 8, 9 & 10 will not be able to attend this important conference to make significant representation on behalf of their communities.
TAAMOG is therefore appealing for urgent restoration of normalcy at Linden.
