FOUR persons were killed last evening and several others injured, and the PPP/C Linden office and the Linmine Secretariat were razed as police moved to clear the Mackenzie/ Wismar bridge following the second day of protests by Lindeners against the July 1, hike in electricity charges in the town. Reports say the protest was Opposition led.
Reports are that Shemroy Bouyea of Silvertown, Allen Lewis of Wismar Hill, Ron Somerset of Wisrock and another unidentified person were killed following shots fired by the police as there was a confrontation when tear gas was thrown by the law enforcement officers in an attempt to force the large gathering off the bridge.
The crowd had earlier resisted calls from the police for them to remove from the link between the east, known as Mackenzie, and the western shore referred to as Wismar.
As the evening drew near, the police ranks, who had earlier been turned away by the crowd, returned with a clear intention to have the residents which included men, women and children along the carriage way of the bridge removed.
The protesters had also used several pieces of old equipment, wood and iron to stall any move to make the bridge passable.
There were reports that Leader of the Opposition, David Granger, was scheduled to travel to Linden last night.
