Impassable East Bank Berbice road to be repaired soon

REGION Six (East Berbice/Corentyne) Mr. David Armogan, relating to the issue of the impassable East Bank Berbice roadway which sparked a protest earlier this week, said remedial works will be undertaken in the Light Town to Mara area shortly. He informed the Guyana Chronicle that the rehabilitation of the main thoroughfare is a huge task, and as such would be undertaken by the Ministry of Public Works, whose machinery is already parked in the compound of the Regional Office at Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam.
However, because of the severity of the roadway, the regional administration has contracted Kris Jagdeo to undertake the task of having the several pot holes filled in the interim.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday last, scores of residents blocked the East Bank’s lone access road after a lorry had become stuck in one of the many potholes on the road, hindering the free flow of traffic.
Highlighting their ongoing grievance to visiting Vice Chairman Bhopaul Jhagroo, residents questioned what should be done in instances of an emergency.
“If there is an emergency, what should we do? If someone needs to be taken urgently to the hospital, what should we do? Or if the thieves attack, how quickly can the police come, seeing that this road is impassible?” they questioned.
According to the aggrieved individuals, they would like to be involved in consultations with the contractors so as to have ‘value for the money’.
