THE threat of rain did not stop the little eager faces from turning up to the highly anticipated Annual P&P Insurance Brokers Junior Tennis Camp Tennis at the Pegasus Tennis Courts yesterday. The GLTA highly anticipates this event each year which is being sponsored by P&P’s Bish Panday. Panday in his opening remarks proudly noted his involvement with the GLTA junior camp since 2004 and is satisfied with the progress made to date and the exposure that it has given to aspiring tennis players.
He reiterated the fact that sporting activities are complementary to the development of young children and help in the cultivation of a healthy lifestyle and therefore he is committed to the nurturing of young talent through sport.
President of the GLTA, Ramesh Seebarran was elated at the turnout despite the overcast sky and applauded Panday for his unwavering support for this tennis event. He urged the young ones to have a great two weeks of fun and make friends with one another but be disciplined in their approach to the sport.
Vice-president and Junior Development Chairperson Grace McCalman affirmed that the GLTA as an executive body is growing from strength to strength and with more certified coaches and refurbished courts at the Racquet Centre and National Park, there will soon be more facilities for tennis programmes and the local tennis fraternity will be elevated once again.
She also highlighted great improvement in their relationship with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport which is a great achievement for the sport.
The camp is being conducted by National junior coach Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan and assistant coaches Jeremy Miller, Andre Lopes and Nicholas Glasgow. Thirty-six of the registered young players showed up on the first day but more are expected to come out during the week.
