New PNCR Leader to be known this week
THE recent nominations for the post of Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) are expected to be released this week, Leader of the Opposition, Retired Brigadier David Granger said. According to him, the process, which started some weeks ago, has been progressing smoothly without any hiccups.

He said all the committees and sub-committees are working as they should and he expects 1,000 delegates and observers to attend the upcoming party congress.
Granger confirmed that he has received a letter, from General Secretary Oscar Clarke, indicating that the Central Executive Committee will have a meeting this week, at which the results of the nomination process would be made known. The nominations for the post of Leader and other positions in the party would have been submitted since June 15, 2012.
But another executive member, Aubrey Norton, suggested that there could be a change in the operational mode of the party, in which the Leader of the Opposition is focused on the parliamentary side of things while the Party Leader, a different person, concentrates on rebuilding and strengthening the organisation’s base.
The Guyana Chronicle had previously reported that, as the PNCR prepares for its 17th Biennial Congress, there is a high probability of Member of Parliament (MP) Carl Greenidge assuming the post, since he was in the lead.
Greenidge was a former Finance Minister under the PNC Government.
The congress, to be convened from July 26 to 29, is themed ‘A united PNCR securing our future through a government of national unity.’
Granger, now Leader of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), is expected to perform well at the PNCR elections.
At the last PNCR Congress, in 2010, he scraped passed Greenidge 279 votes to 264 votes, while another current MP Basil Williams secured 88; Dr. Faith Harding 20 and MP James Bond 13 votes.
Current Party Leader Robert Corbin had signaled that he has no intention of, once again, seeking to retain the position and recalled an earlier intimation that he wanted to see a fresh cadre of leaders at the helm.
Greenidge had contested alongside Granger, Williams and Harding to be the party’s Presidential Candidate for last November’s general elections and Granger emerged winner of that race but did not manage to take APNU to victory at the polls.
