EXCITEMENT filled the atmosphere and the fans present at last weekend matches in the West Demerara Football Association 2012 Stag Beer Senior Football League tournament at the Den Amstel Community Centre ground had a wonderful time.
On Saturday, Beavers defeated Wales 3-2 while the feature game saw Pouderoyen Young Achievers win 2-1 over Eagles.
On Sunday, League leaders Uitvlugt Warriors created the biggest upset in cornering GFF Super League newcomers Den Amstel in an exciting battle which they won 3-2, to continue their dominance in football on the West Side.
In the other matches, surprise Stewartville continued their improvement as they blocked the tide on Seawall 4-0, Beavers edged Wales 3-2 and Pouderoyen Young Achievers overcame Eagles 2-1.
Former national defender Ovril Bobb opened the Warriors score sheet in the 11th minute of the game scoring from a corner, leaving many surprised faces with his shot.
Delon Lanferman lifted the large crowd from their seats when he dribbled the two central defenders and lobbed the ball over the advancing Den Amstel custodian to score in the 23rd minute with the score 2-0.
With more support on their side, Warriors were in their full cry and with blood in their eyes, they kept the Den Amstel side under pressure, something they never expected.
Jamaal Petty then took a free ball at midfield and gave the Den Amstel custodian a test in the 25th minute but he failed to make the best of his technique and the ball ended up in the nets, moving the score to 3-0 which lasted until the end of the first half.
On resumption, Warriors kept the pressure for the first 20 minutes and after demonstrating patience, Anthony Cummings broke the jinks to expose Warriors’ overconfident custodian scoring in the 63rd minute to reduce the deficit to two.
The battle for the possession of the ball continued as the Warriors held on for time, which never allowed them their wish as Vaughn Simon positioned himself on the six-yard box for the square pass from Andre Hector.
Hector dribbled the ball to the goal line of the penalty area, before slipping it out to Simon who was positioned at the top of the six yards box, to place it past the Warriors custodian, to make it 3-2 and while they tried to level the score, they failed to do so at the end of full time.
Earlier a surprise greeted the fans as they came into the ground to hear the score of the first half in favour of the improving Stewartville.
After five minutes of early pressure, Seawall with a lackadaisical approach failed to mark in defence and allowed veteran Owen McGarrell to head a ball from the top of the penalty area to score, opening the score sheet in the 6th minute the score 1-0.
Orette Stephens then took his opportunity to convert his chance in the 15th minute to increase the score to 2-0 and created more pressure, as the Seawall side were left amazed as the score remaining unchanged at the end of the first half.

Wales United responded with Quessey Alleyne seconds later converting the equaliser 1-1 for his side.
It was a good demonstration of excellent football skills as the Beavers showed seniority with their midfield being controlled by veteran Linden Semple.
Semple, who controlled the distribution of the ball commanding the midfield and the patience of his players as he got his consolation from a set play cross ball to place it in the far post past the Wales custodian to lead his team 2-1 in the 26th minute.
Wales did not allow that to deter them as skipper Kevin Roberts got the equaliser from a free kick outside the centre circle on the right side of the field to beat the Beavers custodian at first post levelling the score 2-2 in the 40th minute at the end of the first half.
The second half commenced with a fierce battle for the possession of the ball as both goalkeepers resumed with technical correction and approach to the game, executing excellent saves to secure their goals and share points.
Marksman Maxwell Trapp got an early shot and converted to send his Beavers side in command 3-2 in the 47th minute, the score remaining the same at the end of regular time.
In the feature game, Pouderoyen Young Achievers secured a 2-1 victory over Eagles as they moved to second place in the present league standings.
Sherwin Todd on fire opened the score sheet in the 16th minute to send Achievers 1-0 but Eagles did not worry and equalised in the 24th minute through Kester Tyrell.
Ace forward Delon Millington then took his chance and converted placing his name on the score sheet to command the lead in the 40th minute 2-1 – the score remaining unchanged at the end of the first half.
In the second half both teams played an improved brand of football and lifted the level of competition for the sport in the association as the score remained unchanged at the end of regulation time.
