— July 12/14
THE HUNGER-FREE Initiative for Latin America and the Caribbean will be meeting on July 12-14; and according to Agriculture Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy, Guyana will, for the first time, be hosting the meeting. He said the initiative will help to accelerate the development of Guyana, being consistent with Guyana’s aspiration to eliminate poverty, consistent with the Millennium Development Goals
According to Dr. Ramsammy, the hunger-free Initiative for Latin America and the Caribbean was initiated several years ago to address production capacity in the region, and to ensure that no citizen of the Americas experiences hunger.
He called it a very important programme and said Guyana and the Caribbean should play not only a participating role, but a leadership role.
He added that Guyana is hoping to play an important part in the initiative to feed both Guyanese and people across the Americas, and pointed out that the agenda for the Sixth Meeting on hunger-free Latin America includes looking at progress at the national and sub-regional levels to achieve food security and nutrition.
A review of activities undertaken by the Food and Agriculture Organization in support of the initiative, and examination of governance of the regional sustainable agriculture network are also priorities.
The hunger-free Latin America and the Caribbean initiative support project has already begun to implement the legal component of “strengthening legal frameworks for food security and nutrition”, which will provide technical assistance to seven countries in the region.
