Ninth CARICOM road race launched

… category winners to receive championship jerseys
FOR the ninth successive year, National Milling Company (NAMILCO), for the  celebration of its 43rd anniversary, has joined forces with Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) to host the annual RBC/NAMILCO/ Wheat Up Caricom 65-mile cycle road race, which pedals off on Monday.
RBC’s president Brian Allen said that apart from the annual three and five-stage cycling events which are organised by the National Sports Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the Caricom Day/Wheat Up road race is the largest single cycle race in Guyana.
“Last year we attracted over 61 starters and this year we are targeting more cyclists for what is the largest single cycle race in Guyana,” stated Allen.
According to Allen, RBC’s founder member George Humphrey, Managing Director of Humphrey’s Bakery and Farm Products, was the one who conceptualised the race – a fact that was confirmed by NAMILCO’s Assistant Managing Director, Autamaram Lakeram.
The race will commence at 08:00hrs with a roll off from in front of the Company’s bond and will proceed along the East Bank Demerara carriageway, where the senior and junior cyclists will proceed to Long Creek and turn back, to end in front of the Two Brothers Gas Station.
Females, Veterans, and Mountain Bikers will turn back at the Soesdyke/Linden Highway junction and return to the finish line, completing a distance of 36 miles.
The first-place finisher in each of the five categories, namely seniors, juniors, females, veterans and mountain bikes, will take home a cash prize, trophy and championship jersey.
The other five finishers in the senior category, coupled with the other top two in the remaining four categories, will each receive cash prizes at the presentation ceremony which will take place immediately after the event concludes, in the NAMILCO compound, where Managing Director Bert Sukhai and Lakeram are expected to assist with the distribution of prizes.
Alonso Greaves, Talim Shaw, Neil Reece, Hazina Barret and Jude Bentley are the defending champions in the seniors, veterans, juniors, female and mountain bike categories respectively.
