… wins for Sunburst Camptown, Riddim Squad, Fruta Conquerors and Police
WITH matches remaining in the 201112 Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Banks DIH President’s Beer Football League, the race for the decision of the new champions will be known this Sunday when the final matches will be played at the Georgetown Football Club ground, Bourda. In contention after matches last weekend are: Guyana Defence Force (GDF) with 30 points who can become the new champions if they could secure a victory when they face the Georgetown Football Club (GFC), who can also snatch the crown with a win, which would push them to 31 points.
The others clubs competing in the tournament are: Riddim Squad and Fruta Conquerors who both have 28 points, with Conquerors having a match in hand, Sunburst Camptown and Santos on 27 points with one match in hand and Northern Rangers on 22 points.
Police with 19 points, Flamingo (14 points), Beacon (13 points), Houston Stars (11 points), University of Guyana (10 points), Charlestown (6 points) and Black Pearl with one point, are the other teams in the tournament while GDF’s Desford Williams is the leading goalscorer with 14 goals.
Last Sunday’s matches saw Sunburst Camptown, Riddim Squad, Fruta Conquerors and Police secure wins, which propelled them into a better position in the points standings.
In the first match, Sunburst Camptown defeated Black Pearl 6-2, with Oliver Pollard’s penalty conversion in the 20th minute sending Black Pearl into the lead, before Troy Prescott chalked up the equaliser two minutes after.
Dellon Forde’s double which were scored in the 26th and 52nd minutes of play, handed Sunburst Camptown a 3-1 lead and when Kevin Frank found the back of the net in the 65th minute, the deficit for Black Pearl increased to three, before Pollard scored his second from the penalty spot to reduce it to two.
Lavar Bagot then took his chance and scored his goal in the 68th minute, before Jamaal Codrington put the game out of Black Pearl’s reach, with his 84th minute strike for Sunburst Camptown, as the contest ended 6-2 at the end of regular time.
The second match saw Riddim Squad come from a goal down to record a 2-1 victory over Houston Stars, who scored the first goal of the matchup in the 10th minute off the boot of Eon Hunter, before Rolex Smith equalised in the 28th and Devon Jeffers scored the winning goal in the 36th minute for the victors.
The third match brought together Fruta Conquerors and Charlestown, from which the Tucville lads came out victorious 3-1 with goals from Dwayne Lawrence (22nd) and Dellon William’s double which came in the 27th and 30th minutes, with Casey Barker scoring in the 52nd minute for Charlestown.
Police, the most improved team in the tournament, arrested Flamingo 5-0 to conclude the evening’s matches.
Kevin Boston and Keon Rodney scored twice for Police, doing so in the 50th and 73rd and 65th and 78th minutes of the game respectively, after Deandre Bynoe had issued the arrest warrant with his 31st minute strike.
The action continues on Sunday from 16:00hrs when Beacon will meet Fruta Conquerors and at 18:00hrs, Santos will square off with Sunburst Camptown in the second fixture, with the night climaxing with the GDF versus GFC clash, which will decide the tournament champions.
