THE STABROEK Warriors Sports Organisation’s second annual five-a-side Inter-Market Futsal football tournament will kick off on July 31 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) and run until August 18. The competition started in 2010 but due to the unavailability of the CASH, it was not played last year and according to the coordinator of the tournament, Oneil Durant, they hope to make it bigger and better while making it an annual event, which can become a reality through support from corporate Guyana.
Durant said that to date only the Guyana Beverages Company has indicated its support for this year and the teams who are expected to battle for supremacy will be doing so for cash prizes which will be awarded to the winner, first, second and third runners-up.
Added to the above-mentioned prizes, the player who scores the most goals, the best goalkeeper, best coach and most valuable player will also receive incentives.
Twenty teams will be competing and they are: Stabroek, Lethem, Bartica, Parika, Wales, New Amsterdam, Linden, Melanie, Ann’s Grove, Golden Grove, Buxton, Plaisance, Kitty, Stabroek Warriors, Vendors Arcade, Bourda, East Ruimveldt, La Penitence, Mocha Arcadia, and Mahdia.
Durant said the competition aims to get vendors, porters, and workers together in a friendly environment through sports and promised that it will be dynamic and explosive and urged fans to come out and support the tournament which has grown from the last one, when 14 teams competed and Stabroek Market defeated Mahdia in the final.
