Fire destroys executed businessman’s storage bond in Prashad Nagar

SEVEN days after city businessman Mohamed Shalahudeen Bacchus Baksh was executed, his storage bond located at Lot 322 Rohinital Street, Prashad Nagar, Georgetown was partly destroyed by fire suspected to be arson early yesterday morning. Chief Fire Officer, Marlon Gentle said a female called the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) at about 2:11 hrs, and responded with three fire tenders. The first fire tender arrived at the scene from Campbellville Fire Station, and battled the flames which were set in about four sections of the two-storey concrete building.
Although the building was secured by grill work, the suspected arsonist (s) had still managed to break open a window to set the fire there and at several different areas of the edifice.
Gentle noted that fire was set at the back door using some wooden pallets and boxes, and the GFS, after gaining entry to the building, doused the flames.
The Chief Fire Officer said the two-storey house was converted into a storage bond which housed plumbing and gardening tools worth millions of dollars, some of which were damaged in the fire.
He noted that sections of the building, including the ceiling, were gutted by the fire, while other parts were not.

The police remained on scene yesterday to guard the building, while relatives of Baksh were also present but refused to speak to the media.
Baksh, 42, of Lot 9 Pouderoyen, WBD and of Bel Air Gardens, Georgetown, had been the proprietor of Pest Control Plus.  He was buried after being accorded Muslim rites at Versailles Cemetery, WBD, following the viewing and Janaaza
at Versailles Masjid Compound on Monday.
A post-mortem examination was performed on Baksh’s body last Monday, and it revealed that he had died as a result of gunshot wounds to the head.
The shooter had entered the restaurant and bar where Baksh was socialising with friends in Thomas Street, Georgetown at about 22:00 hrs.
No clear motive has since been established for the killing, but Baksh had previously survived a 2008 shooting attempt on his life on Lamaha Street, Georgetown.
