Defendant snatched jewel from policewoman going to church
A MAN charged with stealing a gold chain from a Police Constable was remanded to prison yesterday. Jermaine Easton, of Lot 101 Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the offence when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
It was alleged that, on June 10, he stole the jewel, valued $80,000, belonging to Samantha Williams.
The virtual complainant told the court she was on her way to church when the defendant rode up behind her and made the snatch. She said she ran after him and lashed him with her umbrella.
Williams said Easton turned around and she was able to recognise him as someone who was previously charged in court.
Police Sergeant Philip Sheriff, prosecuting, confirmed that the defendant was, indeed, facing another similar charge.
The prosecutor said, based on investigations, Easton was picked up by police and later identified by the virtual complainant at Brickdam Police Station.
He will make his next court appearance on July 6.
