– nominations ended last Friday in the lead up to the party’s congress
AS the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) gears up for its 17th Biennial congress, where a new party leader will be elected, there is a high probability of Carl Greenidge copping the post, sources close to this publication made this revelation. Greenidge was a former Finance Minister under the People’s National Congress government.
The congress is expected to be held from July 22 to 29 and will run for three days and according to sources, leader of A Partnership for National Unity Retired Brigadier, David Granger is expected to perform well at the elections.
According to sources too, nominations that have come in so far revealed that Greenidge is in the lead.
Nominations have not yet come in from East Coast Demerara where Granger is expected to make a good showing. It was not immediately clear whether nominations have come in from the overseas groups and the hinterland regions.
At the last PNCR Congress, Granger scraped passed Greenidge 279-264, while Basil Williams came in with 88, Dr Faith Harding 20, and James Bond 13 votes.
Current leader of the Party, Corbin had signaled that he has no intention of once again seeking to retain the position and drew reference to an earlier intimation that he wanted to see a fresh cadre of leaders at the helm.
Already Retired Brigadier, David Granger is a favorite contender for the position but there is indication that the only real challenge will be coming from the party’s Former Finance Minister, Carl Greenidge.
Greenidge had contested alongside Granger, Basil Williams, Dr. Faith Harding and Basil Williams to be the party’s Presidential Candidate for last November’s general elections.
Granger emerged the winner of that race but did not push A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) to secure victory at the polls.
This publication understands that while Basil Williams may still have support enough to be nominated to contest for the post of Leader of the party, he will decline should such a nomination occur.
Corbin had stated that to his future and the imminent new leader of the party, Corbin firstly pointed out that there is no problem in having the Leader of the PNCR and either the President or Leader of the Opposition being a separate person.
Corbin had stated that the party must have at every level, fresh and talented young faces representing every shade of Guyana’s life in the leadership of the party at both the local and national levels.
Greenidge could become new PNCR leader
