Golden Jags oppose the mighty Costa Ricans tonight
TONIGHT Guyana will witness the Golden Jaguars oppose the formidable Costa Rican football team at the Guyana National Stadium in their FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 North, Central America and Caribbean qualifier match from 20:00hrs.
These two teams are in Group B along with the CONCACAF powerhouses, Mexico and El Salvador. Each team has played one match and Mexico lead the Group with three points ahead of Costa Rica and El Salvador who both have one point each while the local side is yet to gain a point.
Both teams are in a tough position to secure points in pursuit of entering round four of the zone. Guyana lost 1–3 to Mexico in Mexico City on Friday while Costa Rica and El Salvador played to a 2-2 draw in San Jose, El Salvador on Thursday.
It is obvious that Guyana have not made any drastic improvements since their match several days ago but their confidence is high as they oppose the side who are the third most successful CONCACAF team in the zone behind Mexico and USA.
However, what is evident is that the players were not discouraged from the defeat but are rather eager to put their best foot forward once again to make the country proud.
In comments made by head coach of the Golden Jaguars team Jamaal Shabazz, he disclosed that he was proud of his team’s performance against Mexico even though Mexico’s ‘12th’ man (fans) played a major role.
He is urging the Guyanese public to come out and support their side and be the 12th man tonight as they create an atmosphere conducive for the hosts which could bring out a better performance.
Meanwhile, the Costa Ricans are pumped and raring to go. They looked quite impressive during their training session yesterday morning at the venue. However, the team declined to speak to the local press following the session.
Costa Rica, the three-time World Cup Qualifying country, must not be taken lightly and top performance side will not go easy on the hosts either.
Every point will be crucial to Costa Rica since they would not like to be caught in the same position as the 2010 World Cup South Africa qualifiers where they missed qualification for the World Cup on goal difference.
The Guyana team reads: Howard Newton, Chris Bourne, Aubrey David, Chris Nurse, Ronson Williams, Richard Reynolds, Colin Edwards, Leon Cort, Charles Pollard, JP Rodrigues, Walter Moore, Kayode McKinnon, Konata Mannings, Kester Jacobs, Dwight Peters, Dwain Jacobs, Gregory Richardson, Anthony Abrams and Shawn Beveney.
The Costa Rica team called up for the match: Keylor Navas, Roy Miller, Keiner Mora, Bryan Oviedo, Jose Salvatierra, Geancarilo Gonzalez, Mismark Acosta, Porfirio Lopez, Celso Borges, Randall Azofeifa, Michael Barrantes, Jose Miguel Cubero, Alvaro Sanchez, Rodnet Wallace, Yeltsin Tejeda, Nestor Monge, Mauricio Castillo, Keylor Soto, Alvaro Saborio, Oscar Rojas, Randall Brenes, Erick Scott, Joel Campbell and Olman Vargas.
All roads lead to Providence Stadium tonight
