FORMER President Bharrat Jagdeo has urged the Region’s tourism ministers to focus on innovations, use of technology and advocacy as the main pillars to strengthen the Caribbean tourism industry. Dr. Jagdeo made the remarks at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Council of Ministers meeting during “Caribbean WeeK” in New York.
Recognising the challenges facing the Region’s economies, he underscored the role and use of technology in delivering the best value for the Caribbean tourism industry’s limited resources.
The former president also emphasised that technological tools and advances must be critically integrated in the strategic position and vision of the key foreign exchange earning tourism sector.
Jagdeo, who is in the forefront of the global fight against climate change, also highlighted the damaging repercussions of inaction on the issue of climate change on the Region’s tourism and hospitality sector.
He challenged the Caribbean tourism ministers to position the CTO as an active participant in the global climate change debate and have a major stake in the dialogue on this issue.
Dr. Jagdeo, who is a member of the United Nations Secretary General’s High Level Panel on Climate Finance, also advocated that the Caribbean tourism industry be in a position of readiness to benefit from finance streams and revenue from international bodies for climate change adaptation projects.
He recommended an aggressive approach towards accessing international financial resources to support climate change and mitigation efforts, which are closely related to the sustainability and survival of the Region’s tourism sector.
