GRA, Police pull ATVs from city wharf

OFFICERS from the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Revenue Authority swooped down on a city wharf last evening and seized two all terrain vehicles (ATVs) and took several persons into custody at the Ruimveldt Police Station. They were escorted through the city to the station by a police pick up and what was described as a four-wheeler that they also had on the wharf. It is not clear if the four-wheeler was also among the seized vehicles.
The details surrounding the seizure are sketchy, but a source told the Chronicle that the ATVs might have been stolen and was being shipped to an interior location, and the police were tipped off.
There is also the suggestion that the seizure might be a continuation of a crackdown by the GRA operation on an illegal racket in which several persons were illegally issued with concessions to import vehicles.
Speaking with the Chronicle last evening, head of the GRA, Kurshid Sattaur, informed that his agency continues to investigate the issue of illegal concessions to several persons, especially miners, by officers of the Authority.
Over the years, the GRA has been battling with persons who approach officers of the agency with lucrative offers that see some of them compromising themselves and the operation of the GRA.
