AFTER four years without a senior football league, the West Demerara Football Association in partnership with Ansa Mc Al Trading Limited under the stag Beer Brand kicked off the 2012 Senior Football league at the Den Amstel Community Centre ground yesterday, with Uitvlugt Warriors recording a  3-1 win over Stewartville and Den Amstel getting a 2-0 victory over Seawall. The opening game saw Uitvlugt Warriors under the leadership of former national player Orville Bobb doing double duties as captain and coach. Stewartville who demonstrated speed and skill on the windy Den Amstel ground with the fierce Atlantic breeze forcing all their long ball plays to go wasted, since they  all went off target at their opponent’s goal.
Patience paid off as the Warriors got a free ball in the dying minutes of the first half when Delroy Johnson found the Stewartville goalkeeper out of position and slipped the ball past him at the first  post in the 41st minute to set up a 1-0 lead  at half-time.
At the  resumption, as the the Warriors continued to dominate Stewartville who squandered a few goal scoring opportunities saw another mistake committed when the central defender missed the free back pass and nippy forward Delon Langferman made no mistake this time to convert sending his side a 2-0 lead in the 64th minute.
All was not lost as Stewartville hopes were lifted two minutes later with a beautiful shot from Owen Mc Garrell snapping past the Warriors custodian in the 66th minute to have the score changed to 2-1.
The fierce battle continued for possession of the ball with heavy physical challenges and cautions from the referee as the game continued in the Warriors favour. Jamaal Harvey, the desperate seeking midfielder netted in the 86th minute to seal the bid  for Uitvlugt Warriors  as the scoreline read 3-1, which remained at  the end of regulation time.
The supporting game saw GFF national league newcomers demonstrating youth speed and tactical and technical awareness in the game as both teams  fielded  young squads in their opener.
Den Amstel took the game to the relaxed Seawall FC and found a few first half goal scoring opportunities but failed to convert against the alerted   Julius Griffith in goal.
Seawall’s custodian Griffith was, however, taken to the test   by Andre Hector and Jeffrey Pereira. Pereira who seemed on a number of occasions like he was going to seal the bid was denied by Griffith, who, one on one and even at point blank range persisted and converted in the 34th minute to send Den Amstel in a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half.
On resumption the challenges were numerous as Griffith did his best to stop all the scoring opportunities and lifted his team with beautiful saves as the game progressed.
A free ball on the left side was won by Hector who dribbled  pass  four players towards the western goal entering the penalty area unchallenged, then  dribbled two defenders to slip the ball to Pereira who converted in the 48th minute sending Den Amstel further  in the lead 2-0.
