Guyana Ruggers tackle T&T in SC final tomorrow

… Banks DIH on board through Malta Supreme brand
BEVERAGE manufacturing giant Banks DIH, an ardent supporter of rugby once again partnered with the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) as the union prepares to host the South Caribbean final of the 2015 Rugby World Cup Qualifiers against Trinidad and Tobago at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, tomorrow.
Yesterday in a simple ceremony, which was held in the Banks DIH Thirst Park conference room, the sponsor committed in excess of $500 000 under the Malta Supreme brand for the event.
Banks DIH Public Relations Officer, Troy Peters, stated that his company is pleased to partner with the GRFU, as they join the nation in supporting the Guyana team against Trinidad and Tobago.
He said, “I know that it a tough task but we are certain that Guyana can overcome. We feel a sense of pride with the work GRFU has done over the years. It was seen that they have advanced and rugby has taken this country to new heights.”
Responding to Peters’ comments was the president of GRFU, John Lewis, who said: “We have gotten to the international level and when you get there it brings pride, joy and exposure. This is where the support and sponsorship is needed to participate and Banks came along at a good time to help us over that hurdle.”
Lewis went on to say that the union is very appreciative of the support and would hope when the players go abroad that they will still have the support of the beverage giant. He would like to urge the public to come out, wear green and support the local boys.
Meanwhile, the team from the Twin-Island Republic is expected to arrive in Guyana today for the 16:00hrs showdown against the home team tomorrow.
Both Guyana captain Ryan Gonsalves and head coach/player Theodore Henry think that Guyana have a good chance of defeating T&T for the second consecutive year.
Speaking to Henry at the press briefing he disclosed that at the moment he is comfortable with the team’s preparations. “I think we have addressed all the areas we need to so I think we are ready,” he said.
Following the press briefing, Gonsalves told the media that the confidence in the camp is very high and the players are looking forward to the game which he thinks will be a good one, once the players execute their plan.
According to Gonsalves, they will be banking on the return of the senior players such as Richard Staglon, Claudius Butts and Kevin McKenzie to take them past the visitors.
He said, “Currently, we the senior players are putting our heads together to help the younger guys and once everything goes well we expect another victory over Trinidad.”
