PROFESSOR of Sociology and Anthropology at Baruch College, City University of New York, Parmatam Saran, paid a courtesy call on President Donald Ramotar, Monday, a few hours before delivering a guest lecture. The lecture, which coincides with Arrival month activities, will focused on the Indian immigrant experience in the United States, and will be used as a fact – finding mission by the professor to learn about Guyana.
Professor Saran met the President in the company of his spouse, Rupam Saran, who also lectures at the University in the Medgar Evers College, and Pro-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Dr. Prem Misir.
He had a meaningful exchange with President Ramotar and described his visit as very positive, speaking of the cultural similarities between Guyana and his native land, India. He was most of all delighted by the fact that he found common ground with the Guyanese Head of State, who along with himself, has Bihar roots.
As part of his working visit, Professor Saran facilitated discussions on fostering partnerships between City University and the University of Guyana on the establishment of a Global Studies Programme.
India’s technological expertise on solid waste management and the initiatives Guyana can adopt to improve its system also formed part of their discussion. (GINA)
