SEVERAL persons were injured yesterday when two buses travelling along the busy East Bank Demerara thoroughfare, collided and ended up in a trench at Coverden.
The accident occurred around 16:00hrs, as most of the passengers of the bus overtaken were returning home to Kuru kururu, either from work or school. The Kuru kururu passengers said that they were overtaken by a blue bus which crashed into the side of theirs. Among the injured are Suelan Daniels, 16, of Ideal Road, Soesdyke Linden, a student of St. Joseph’s High School, currently writing CSEC Examinations. She was at the time, returning home after writing exams; Carol Baker, 25, of 288 Ramsingh Road “B” Field, Sophia; Royston Jocintho, 35, also of Kuru kururu; Christel Samaroo, 23, of Kuru kururu; Yolanda Glen, a nursery school teacher, of Kuru kururu ; Anastacia George, 14, of 730 Kuru kuru Housing Scheme; her mom Klachene Williams; and the driver of the bus transporting them – name given only as Ryan, also called ‘To-To’. The victims all suffered multiple injuries, fortunately none life-threatening.
It was a miracle, they claim, that no one perished. Rescue workers, led by Elroy Klass, 35, also of Kuru kuru, who was the first to the rescue, gave details of the accident and rescue operations. He said that several of the passengers were trapped in one of the buses which was almost submerged in the trench.
Some of the victims opted to be taken to private hospitals.
