GUYANA Defence Force’s (GDF) Colonel John Lewis has replaced the long-serving Christopher ‘Kit’ Nascimento – who did not seek reelection – as the president of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU). The GRFU held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) Sunday last and apart from Nascimento, who was first elected president in 2002 and served until his resignation four years later before being re-elected in 2010, outgoing Secretary Roxanne Thomas-Alleyne did not stand for election.
Another outgoing official, senior vice-president Robin Roberts, did not stand for election to this post, but was available to serve as a member of the Committee, for which he was duly elected.
Apart from serving as president of the GRFU, Nascimento also stewards the North America and West Indies Rugby Association (NAWIRA), a position he was elected to hold in 2006, shortly before his resignation from the top post of the GRFU.
The newly elected GRFU body reads: Col. John Lewis (president, Michael McCormack (Senior vice-president), Alwin Etwah (Junior vice-president), Arianne Mangar (secretary), Leonardo Butcher (treasurer), Nicole Nero (Asst. secretary/treasurer) Gem Madhoo (PRO) and Peter Campayne (Match secretary).
Apart from Roberts, the other two Committee Members are Joseph Rahaman and Grace Jarvis.
The first order of business for the newly elected executive committee, is getting the Guyana 15s team to Barbados where they will take on that Island’s team in a North American and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) event this weekend.
