Sexagenarian denied bail on drug trafficking charge

A SEXAGENARIAN man was refused bail on a drug trafficking charge, before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday. Sixty-eight-year-old Jacob Michaud (no address given) pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which stated that, on May 12, he had two kilogrammes (510 grammes) of cannabis (marijuana) for the purpose.
Defence Counsel Latchmi Rahamat, whose application was denied, said a special reason in the case is that the defendant alone does not live where the narcotic was found.
She said three other persons occupy the house but when the search was conducted only Michaud was at home and the substance was discovered in the bottom of a stove and anyone could have put it there.
However, Police Corporal Simone Payne, prosecuting, who objected to the grant, said, according to her facts, the defendant is the sole occupant of the house.
The man has to make another court appearance on July 18.
