Two Grenadians confirmed for third President’s/Jefford Classic
TWO athletes from Grenada have been confirmed to compete in this Sunday’s third annual President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic, which is set to be staged at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden. The two are Kimon Henry, who will compete in the Men’s 800m and 1500m and Kenisha Pascal who is scheduled to face USA-based Guyanese Marian Burnett over similar distances.
While not much was ventilated about Henry’s quality, Pascal is quite familiar with Guyanese opposition, having competed for a number of years against the likes of middle distance queen Alika Morgan and her Guyanese compatriot Euleen Josiah-Tanner within the Caribbean.
Just last year in St Kitts and Nevis, she suffered a defeat to Josiah-Tanner in the CARICOM 10K race, but was able to avenge an earlier loss to Morgan, who had also beaten her at a previous CARICOM 10K event.
Pascal seems to be well suited to the longer distances and will definitely have her work cut out against her more established opponent in Burnett, who all of Guyana knows has battled with the best in the world over the middle distances and is quite comfortable in the 800m and 1500m races.
Last year, Pascal destroyed a strong field to win the OECS Half Marathon and her coach Kwame Hypolite, who will be accompanying the two athletes to Guyana, said he was happy with the level of improvement he has seen from her.
The athletes and coach are scheduled to arrive in Guyana on May 19, while the organisers are awaiting the names of the representatives from Suriname.
