-following accident with trawler
NARESH Lall Ramjattan, a farmer of Charity New Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast, has lost more than five hundred thousand dollars in produce after a trawler slammed into his boat in the Pomeroon River on Friday afternoon. Recalling the incident, Ramjattan said his father and two other workers were travelling in his boat from his farm at Aberdeen, Lower Pomeroon River, en route to Charity with a cargo of 24,000 dried coconuts (already peeled), farm tools and a motor blower when, around 19:00 hrs, a privately-owned trawler heading for the Pomeroon River mouth crashed his boat, throwing everything into the river as the vessel sank.
The farmer said his cargo of coconuts quickly went under the water while the men struggled for their lives in the dark river. Ramjattan said they shouted for help, and residents quickly rushed to their assistance with boats.
The matter was reported to the Charity Police Station, and the police responded swiftly, travelling along the river to catch up with the trawler some 15 miles from the Pomeroon River Mouth.
Ramjattan said the police brought back the trawler to Charity, and impounded it at businessman Big Bird’s Wharf at the Charity Fish Port Complex.
Investigations are ongoing.
