DURING the recent National Grade Six examinations held at Novar Primary School, on the final day my great granddaughter came home, she told me that they were supplied with bottled drinking water free of charge. I said God bless the government. She promptly said it was supplied by a small businessman who has his shop not far from the school. I got to know the gentleman by taking my grands to school, now and then. His name is Mr. Bickram (the children call him uncle Bick). I made it my duty to go and thank him for his kind gesture. I told him the school should thank him. He said he does not want publicity, he is a humble person.
I asked him what made him decide to make the donation and he said there are a couple of things. I asked him like what. Cutting me off at times to attend to his customers, he said, some of his brothers and sisters, himself, his wife, his children and grandchild had attended the school and some are currently attending it. He said that one of his grandsons wrote the examination.
He also said during the examination he always remembered Prime Minister Sam Hinds. They were schoolmates and his wife, classmate during his school days.
He said the examination back then was called government county scholarship of which the Prime Minister was a recipient of that prestigious scholarship. He said if he is not mistaken, the Prime Minister was the only person to pass the examination at Novar.
He said the water was donated in his honour; he did them proud during their school days. I asked him if he told the PM about donating the water, he said no. I asked him if he will be making future donations of water, he said he will try as the one who made that possible will continue to show him the way to continue . The kids he said supported his shop and it is a way of giving back.
Through your newspaper, I would like to thank Mr. Bickram ad his family for their noble gesture. God bless them all.
I would like to se other people who can afford make some kind of contributions too.
