Pensioner on drug trafficking charge

A 65-year-old pensioner was yesterday hauled before the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. The prosecution is contending that Veronica Hercules  of 55 Fourth Street, Belmont, Mahaica, had in her possession 32 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Attorney-at-Law, Sandel Kissoon, respresenting Hercules, told the court that the circumstances are unique as the property in which the illegal substance was allegedly found was occupied by seven persons at the time.
He further told the court that prior to his client’s arrest, she was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit at the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital for six days as a result of a heart condition from which she suffers.
The lawyer went on to inform the court that on the day in question when the police went to his client’s home, the illegal substance was found over a wall divider in the living room to which everyone had access, and his client was confined to bed.
He told the Magistrate that his client even provided a statement to the police about the persons who were there in her home taking care of her at the time.
The pensioner was released on $45,000 bail.
