Body washes ashore at Hampton Court, Essequibo Coast
A BODY suspected to be that of schoolboy Devon Gibson of Lot 9-10 Queen Street, Cummingsburg (Tiger Bay), Georgetown, was found at the foreshore at Hampton Court, Essequibo Coast early yesterday morning. A resident made the discovery at about 04:00 hrs yesterday morning. Police contacted the child’s relatives, and, up to press time, they were en route to Essequibo to view the body, which is in an advanced state of decomposition.
The seven-year-old St. Margaret’s Primary School pupil disappeared under water in the Demerara River while on a swimming expedition accompanied by a male adult and five boys from the area on Saturday last.
The group had ventured out to the Kingston jetty in Georgetown unknowingly to elders. Only five returned alive, since Gibson, a non-swimmer, vanished after he had encountered difficulties in the turbulent waters which swept him away.
Despite several searches conducted by both his relatives and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard, no trace of the child was found until yesterday morning when the corpse of a boy suspected to be that of Gibson was spotted at Hampton Court, Essequibo Coast.
